Syndrome X
Approach
This metabolic syndrome of hyperinsulinemia is associated with high blood pressure, high triglyceride levels, and low HDL (‘good’ cholesterol) levels. Predisposing factors include a family history of Type II diabetes, a diet high in carbohydrates, and a sedentary lifestyle. Truncal obesity, fatty liver, difficulty losing weight, and hypoglycemia often accompany this condition.
Naturopathic Treatment
Syndrome X, like hyperinsulinemia, can be treated in the same way as Type II diabetes, with lifestyle counseling, dietary therapy, nutrient supplements, and botanical medicines. Exercise is proven to reduce insulin problems.
Conventional Treatment
Metformin (Glyburide) is commonly prescribed for insulin resistance in Syndrome X and hyperinsulinemia. Metformin causes the liver to decrease its production of glucose, so that there is no longer excessive glucose to trigger unneeded insulin secretion.
